These two things put together mean that I very rarely put any thought into my future or, when I do put thought into my future, I despair. As such, I’m living in a constant state of now, where playing Skyrim is much more important than, say, getting my car registered, taking out the garbage, or feeding myself.

This feeds into the cycle of depression, because I occasionally have moments of clarity where I realize that I am not taking care of myself and that I am so behind in taking care of myself that I may as well not start.

This sucks. It’s not properly appreciating, as John Green would put it, the miracle of human consciousness. I am 29 years old. I have, probably, another 45-50 years ahead of me. I need to make sure that those years are awesome. Not only that, but I need to make sure that tomorrow is a little more awesome than today, next week a little more awesome than next week, next year a little more awesome than this year.

So, because burying the lede is fun, I’m starting a project. Each day I am going to make sure I do at least one thing that benefits Future!Me. It may be Future!Me of tomorrow, Future!Me of next week, or Future!Me who is 65. I’m not talking about stopping global warming. Don’t forget, I am often in such a bad state that I forget to do basic stuff like laundry. I’m just talking about getting shit done in my life and starting to live like an adult.

The hope is that, next time I’m having one of those depressive fits, I can take a look and say, “Hey, I did that one thing and I’m totally benefiting from it now.”

Today’s thing that is to the benefit of Future!Me is… creating this project, starting this blog. Who knows what I will do tomorrow?
